Escobedo Gargletron

...And what's behind door number two?!

Heh. We talked about doing a "Layout advent calendar" for you all. Mark started on the 1st of december with Landgraff M'OD, and i'm continuing with another Escobedo circuit - The Gargletron. Original sample of the sound can be heard here.
From Tim Escobedo:
"Talking" type effect, two parallel MFB filters tuned by a single 10K pot. Similar to EH Talking Pedal and Craig Anderton's Wah/Anti-Wah design. Gives good wovel sounds.

  1. Thanks micro! I have been looking for the envelope filter effect that will funk things up. FWIW, when printing these in black and white your diode polarity is much easier to see than Marks but the resister markings sometimes make it difficult to read the value.

    Cannot wait to build this and report back! Thanks again, you guys rule! Keep those filter effects coming cuz I need my pedal fix.

  2. I love all these layouts but I'm interested in learning how exactly the circuits work, i.e. why is this resistor there and what does it do, or why this transistor here and what's this diode for?

    Got any good links to resources for learning about electronics for audio applications?

      But... The best way to learn is to do the builds. You can find everything you'll ever need from the web, but it's scattered around in tiny pieces.

      If you can get your hands on Indyguitarist's (that's Brian Wampler) ebooks, take a look at those. He writes in understandable language.

  5. I've breadboarded this from the original circuit diagrams. It gave a good, controllable "cocked" open wah sound. The pot allowed for some Q freq adjustments. If you are looking for that, this worked nicely. Good luck and thanks.

  6. Tag it. This one's alright. The distortion section is decent (no shortage of low end on bass), and the filter does what it's supposed to do. However, I'm not TOO impressed. This is a pedal that would work really well in a wah housing, but by itself, I don't really see a use for it. You also may want to install a diode lift switch so you can just have the filter.
    I didn't have 50k, 5M or 5n caps, so I used 4n7, 47K and 4M7. IC was a 4560.

      Escobedo always has 50K, 5K, 5n, 50n and 50u components in his schematics - 4.7/47 is always fine :)

    2. A bit of an update. Using a log pot for the Gargle control improves it heavily, and I think the Gargle pot wiring may be backwards.

    4. I'll reverse it anyway. The schematic doesn't specify pot tapers, so once again i may have assumed wrong :) I'll post fixed layout asap.

  7. It sweeps high to low, instead of low to high (as you would expect from a standard wah.) Whether this is how Escobedo intended it, I'm not too sure.

  8. If I wanted to add an LFO to vary the sweep with an ldr-led combo, would I connect it between gargle 1 and 3?
